Abstract:
Chiefly snapshots documenting a United States Geological Survey group's activitities at various locations throught California,
with an emphasis on the southern desert regions, and a few locations in Nevada. One photograph caption identifies most of
the surveyors depicted in the albums: Muller, Turner, Biggs, McDonell, Auten, Phillps [i.e. Phillips?]. Activities and other
subjects depicted include spirit level surveying, camping, various types of transportation (mules, wagons, coaches, trains,
etc.) used or encountered by the surveyors, and landscapes. Identified California locations depicted include Death Valley,
Mojave Desert, Inyo County, Owens Valley, San Joaquin River, Hoopa River, Ballarat, Panamint Valley, San Bernardino, Argus
Mountains, Mount Whitney, Kramer, Trinity River, Bishop and Copper City. Identified Nevada locations include Ash Meadows,
Amargosa Desert, and Rhyolite. Various Native American groups are represented, the only identified tribe being the Hoopa.
Other subjects include a few views of Humboldt County logging, and a view of San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake and
fire.
